we hatched 4 eggs from this cross and the chicks are light yellow (almost white) with a few black scattered patches. Anyone know if they can be feather sexed? One of them is already growing out its tail and the other three still have fuzz.

looks like of the 4 that hatched, 3 may be roos. that's my luck. We hatched out 5 more- time will tell.

I don't know if your birds even can be feather sexed. Your leghorn might have passed along the gene, but I honestly have no clue which strains have the gene

Nope. In feather sexing crosses, the fast feathering breed, the white leghorn in this case, has to be the roo.

And you White lehorn hen does not have the silver genes needed to produce sexlinks or you would have gotten color sexable chicks. Lots of people are falsly told they can make sexlinks with White leghorn hens.

That's an interesting question . I'm pretty sure the hybrid leghorns like Hyline carry the sex-linked Kk necessary for feather sexing , but not sure how that works when crossbreeding to a breed that probably doesn't have it introduced . I'm thinking it might make a difference whether or not the roo was the leghorn half in this cross .
ETA ............ and rereading the title I see it was production reds over leghorn hens , so I doubt its possible to feather sex the chicks .

The thing is we don't know what "type" of Production Red rooster the OP used.
Some Production Reds are bred solely for the R.I. Reds others are a R.I. Red with Leghorn blood added in..

so far, out of the 4 chicks, looks like we may have 3 males- that's my luck....

They're white/very blonde with just a few black spots. Feathering out- white chicken with an occasional black feather. We just hatched 5 more- hopefully more females in that batch.

Now we've got about 10 of them. Sure looks like we've got a lot of roos (although from the leghorn side the females do have those big combs- waiting to see which ones stay straight up and which ones flop over!) Cute chicks though- look like leghorns- all white with a little bit of black bleeding thru a few random feathers.
