proffesional dog breeder advice. UPDATE: We have a tie!

Yes there is a breeder with a proven stud close by. Like I said earlier if it was up to me I would of gone that route, but my father in law is the one who bought Annie for me, he has spent a bit of money getting all the testing done on Brutus, and he is so excited about getting "pick of the litter" He is 74 and a wonderful man who has helped us a lot in the last five years. So if at all possible I would like Brutus to be the father. I just don't want to wait "to long" to call the breeder and get her with a stud dog. I have some hope though. Today he tried to mount once, she spun and tried to mount him back so I don't think she is quite there. We have considered the smear, but really don't see the point in spending money on that, at the moment my plan is to wait until Sunday, then if still no breeding will call the breeder and take Annie over there on Monday. Also I think Brutus is a very handsome guy, and I think they would have cute puppies, so I am hoping it works with him.

Thanks again for all the help, I will keep you all updated (and we are keeping them separate except for a couple hours supervised every day. I want to "know" that it happened not guess that it might have.

Bring your grump everyday to stud dog or your vet. Both can tell when she is ready, then breed her to your dog artifically.

Well last night when I got off work I let her back out with him while I carried in grocerys, he would mount her but the wrong end. I tried holding her for him but then he just wanted attention. Today he did mount once from behind, but seemed confused about what happened next, she stood for a bit while he tried but then turned and mounted him, this turned into a play session, later on he would sniff her for a long time, she would finally almost seem bored and would turn and mount him, its like shes saying " look this is what you are suppose to do!" lol he doesn't like her to try to mount him and they got into a bit of an argument earlier. (again if I hold her he acts like she isn't there, cause he wants petted)
We have to go help my sister in law paint so that hopefully her daughter can do visitations with her baby there instead of having to drive 45 miles every other day to see her baby. (long story) So I will chain up Brutus and Annie will be in the entry way, till tonight. I will give them another chance tonight before I go to bed. Then I guess we will see what happens tomorrow. How long do I have? Thinking of calling and taking her to the other stud on monday. If they haven't accomplished anything by then. Also is one breeding enough? I mean if they actually accomplish it with a tie, can I take Brutus back to my father in law? Or do they need to tie multiple times to ensure pregnancy?

One tie is enough, however two breedings, a day apart is even better. You don't need a full "tie" to get a litter, though its nice to know they tie to help ensure conception. Is she flagging? I assume she is since she is letting him mount.

Also-- don't let them near eachother all the time. You'll get much more assertiveness from the male dog that isn't kept around the female and can watch in anticipation. Her flirting means she's getting close to ovulation, pretty soon you'll see her insisting that he mounts her. I have seen females bite the male dogs when they weren't doing it the right way LOL.

We tried once (our stud was too young) with a stud from a breeder... we had to leave Rosie over with the breeder that time, and though the breeder was experienced and the stud proven, and we were told they tied 3 times... it didn't take.
So, 6 months later we bred her with our boy.... Rosie was always the dominant female with him, but things went well and we had pups... but Rosie would do the hump him back thing too.. even after they had tied already. Its a dominance thing, a lot of the time, for the female... She is saying, "Ok, there is a reason I let you hump me, but you're still not the alpha here".
Im sure the breeder you mentioned wouldn't mind if you give them a call and let them know your situation, that you're trying and you'd like to have another option if it doesen't work. Many are very kind and understanding in this regard, so why not give them a call for a bit of a heads up, and reassurance for yourself? The advice you have gotten here sounds like the way to go, very knowledgeable... but just to say how we let things happen with our dogs... whenever we were home during the days Rosie was in the 'window', they were left out together in the house. Our male, Dundee, underdog that he was, seemed to need that time out with her to 'get in the swing of things' and get really into chasing her. It was always a chase.. and she would growl at him, and snap, even when she was flagging. We had to be very firm with no attention given to either, no holding or petting, so they would actually concentrate on one another. After a time, poor Rosie would often run to us looking for protection from him, and I remember feeling horrible, but we had to make her stay down. If you want puppies, its what you have to do, or so we told ourselves.
I am a little concerned with the issue of Brutus being on the chain... I understand you have very good reasons and need to keep him safe... but if hes not free to chase her, it makes it difficult for the mating to happen. A first timer female, let alone most females, isen't likely to just come over to him on her own when shes ready. He really needs to be able to chase her around and not have areas where she can get away from him. Do you have a room in your house you feel comfortable leaving them out together in? I think each session with them together should give them at least 4 or 6 hours to flirt and chase before you expect anything to happen. It really sounds like he has never bred before, so I think he needs the time to figure the whole thing out. And, ignoring them both while they are together, and only keeping watch out of the corner of your eye, is what we were advised to do.
Im thanking God for Annie & Brutus puppies!!
