How can I upload a picture of my profile picture. I go to edit and have tried even just pressing the profile picture area

This is how to change your avatar on desktop version of BYC, you can switch to desktop by scrolling down to the bottom of any page and clicking desktop.

First go into your profile at the top right hand side of the home page ~

Then look under where your avatar is for replace avatar, click on that ~

Choose a pic from your camera roll then click submit ~

I got my avatar posted. I'm using the backyard chickens app can I get those cute emojis using the app

I think it depends on what kind of editor is in your reply box. I'm not on app but use desktop on my iPad and my emojis are on the right hand side of my reply box ~

It shows what codes will produce each one.
