Profitable Quail?

LOOK IN THE STICKY AT THE TOP OF THE QUAIL FORUM,,, THERES A LISTING THERE THAT DEALS WITH LEGALITIES AND LICENSURE LINKS. IF IT ISNT COVERED THERE CALL YOUR LOCAL GAME WARDEN YOURSELF AND SPEAK TO THEM DIRECTLY... THIS WAY THERE CAN BE NO DOUBT LIKE TAKING THE WORD OF AN ANONYMOUS STRANGER OVER THE INTERNET

If you put a pencil on the numbers, its gonna take a lot of sales to make a profit. Even then a hiccup in production or sales, that profit turns into a loss... It can and is being done, but keep your day job...

Good luck, Bill

I could see it being profitable but you would have to sell something else with the quail.

like some eggs and an incubator or something like that...

i think with some education. people will start to understand how quail can be a

sustainable and effective means of feeding the people and themselves.

with the green movement still having strength

people that cant keep chicken or don't want to

quail are an excellent alternative

it all starts with education

NO SIR THAT'S WHERE YOU'RE MISTAKEN.... IT ALL STARTS WITH MONEY. AND MONEY MY FRIEND IS A FRAIL AND FICKLE THING... BILL COVERED IT CORRECTLY-- YOU CAN MAKE A SMALL PROFIT AT IT BUT DONT QUIT YOUR DAY JOB! MY BIRDS (AND I HAVE MANY DIFFERING SPECES- MOST ARE TOWARD THE HIGHER END OF THE DOLLAR SPECTRUM) PAY FOR THEMSELVES, AND TURN A SMALL PROFIT... WHICH GETS RE-INVESTED INTO THE BUSINESS. THE PROCEEDS ARE NOT ENOUGH TO PAY MY WAGES OR BILLS, BUT THE GIRLS ARE EARNING THEIR KEEP. ANY EXPENSES SPENT TOWARD BIRD CARE- FEED, MATERIALS FOR NEW PENS OR REPAIRS, EQUIPMENT (MY LIKE 3 LOVELY NEW CABINET INCUBATORS

) AND NEW STOCK ACQUISITIONS COME DIRECTLY FROM EGG SALES... I SPEND NO MONEY ON THE FLOCK, IT IS SELF SUPPORTIVE IN EVERY WAY FINANCIALLY, BUT I DO SPEND A BUTT-LOAD OF UNPAID TIME ON THEM. WHEN MONEY GETS TIGHT PEOPLE STOP BUYING THINGS... ALL IT TAKES IS 1 LIL MISHAP OR SALES SLUMP AND I'M IN THE RED AND QUICK TOO! LEMME TELL YA, BIRDS, EGGS, AND SALES ARE ABOUT AS FAR AWAY FROM AN EXACT SCIENCE AS YOU CAN GET

Bill and JJ have pretty much nailed it. The best you can hope for is for your quail operation to "hold it's own". If, on the other hand, you develop a new and inovative product, you can get rich. That's why I'm workin' on my Tazmanian White-meat Giant project. Once I unleash these things on the public, I'll be bigger than Lady Gaga. Paris Hilton will be carryin' around one of my quail instead of that stupid chihuahua, and Rap stars will be wearin' them around their necks attached to gold chains, Yo.

It depends what you define as 'profitable'.

For example, I sell potted herb plants every spring in the neighborhood that supermarkets don't carry: Thai Basil, Lovage, Chervil and such. (and hopefully some quail eggs soon too!).

This makes about 200 pounds a year. Not much, but, I've been doing it for many years and over 20 year's time, it will have brought in £4000, or the equivalent of working 500 hours in a minimum wage job(more if you pay tax!).

If I tried to save this up, this would be quite a a lot, so I'd say that selling herbs is profitable, and quail eggs will probably also be profitable, it all depends on if you can find customers and keep them. For my quail hobby to be 'free', I'd have to sell 120 eggs a week, and given my current customer base, I may well achieve that.

As a small scale hobby that feeds you instead of you feeding it with money, it's probably quite good, nearly as good as keeping bees in topbar hives you can make for free or brewing wine, where in the UK your effort is almost worth £30 an hour in savings.

If you pay yourself anything but "the joy of raising quail" no.... best case I would say you make enough to feed the birds.... Bill
