Hey!
As some of you know, I'm currently working for a local company as a programmer. I am leaving to Italy next summer, where I will be starting a homestead. I have been scratching my head for the last couple of months about job opportunities.
Italy alone is having a really bad time with jobs, as you can't even find any. I was looking for a part-time programmer job, which is already hard to find as most won't hire part-time. I've been lately thinking about freelancing. I mean, it sounds pretty good. I'd have way more free time to manage the animals and the crops, I'd have my own hours, and I could work part-time!

So yeah, I'd like to ask... would you guys recommend this? I really like the idea but I have this small spot in my head doubting me. I've never really freelanced. Is the pay good?

In a summary, is this asking for trouble? I'd really hate to have to switch careers.

Thank you very much!

Cant give you suggestions on your job, but am curious. What is your reason to relocate to Italy??? I do have relatives with ties to Italy. They tell me that all of them (with exceptions of some seasoned citizens) wish they were here in the USA. :idunno They are not in the wealthy category.

My reason for moving to Italy is this...
I currently live in Malta, which is a great country, good economy, good taxes etc... however my life goal/dream is to start a homestead. I can't start a homestead in Malta, it's practically impossible, unless I'm a millionaire. For starters, agricultural land costs a ton, 1 usable acre would be over 100k+. Laws in here are very strict about agricultural land. Getting permits to build small buildings like a chicken coop, barns, animal pens, etc are practically impossible unless you have connections with the council. It's just not a good country for homesteading. Actually, come to think of it, I don't think there is a homestead in Malta. It's just literally fields with crops. Oh, keep in mind fields are actually rare in Malta as we are over-populated and all the fields are being built on.
So yeah, Italy is my best choice I assume. Land is cheap, life is pretty much cheap, I would live VERY close to family, and I know the language. My first thought was to move to the UK as its nice to start a homestead there, however the climate just doesn't fit me. I'm used to the Mediterranean climate, the perfect climate for gardening, and everything to be honest. Oh, and believe me, if I could move to the USA, I would in a heartbeat, but I believe it's practically impossible to move there as I'm from Europe. I did some research on how to get a visa(legally of course), and I found that it would probably be no luck.

What's your speciality with programming? There's always opportunity to carve your own path. It's more a matter of your skill base and creativity in growing a client base.

If you're relocating to Italy to start a homestead, I'm assuming you're already funded to make that happen. The internet kind of brings the world to your doorstep no matter where you live. Create a website as a home base for marketing your skills and query companies for contracted work.

There are highly qualified programmers in countries like India, where lots of people have college degrees and experience but few opportunities for work. So they tend to have a strong presence on sites where people can solicit bids for programming work. They're able to work for significantly less than Americans, which dilutes the pay rate you can expect on some of those sites. Good for them and their families, but with a global marketplace it can be tough for people in this country.

But there's bound to be opportunities waiting for you to find them.

Now everything makes sense. If you would have put your location in your profile, I would not have been asking silly questions. BYC has members from all over the WORLD.. I was giving some pigeon advice recently to someone in Lebanon.
WISHING YOU BEST IN YOUR HOMESTEAD VENTURES.. :thumbsup

Hey guys, sorry for not including my location... I just put it in now :)
Oh, and Sunshineflock, I actually know 5 languages, long story short my parents moved to Malta from Greece so I had to catch up with some languages :he
So, I learnt English, Maltese and Italian from school and Greek from my parents :thumbsup
Got to say though, it's pretty handy knowing more than one language, can't count the times when I had to say something to my boss in Greek so he wouldn't understand... you get the drift :D

Thanks both very much by the way :)

EDIT: Forgot to include that I learnt Dutch when I was 18, funny thing is I learnt it online because I had a 'pen friend'/gaming buddy who was Dutch and he basically 'motivated' me to learn the language. I'm not completely fluent in it, however I understand almost all phrases and sentences...

a 100K for one acre of farm land!!!! land most be a hot commodity over there, and i was told that my grandparents farm of 480 acres is not enough to make a living off of farming.

(sorry that blew my mind)

but best of luck to you. hope you get your homestead in Italy :)
