Picked up 20 chicks from post office april 8th. One barely moving. Set her aside. Within next 2 days 4 more so lost total of 5 the first 2 days. All were the yellow ones. No issues with dark ones.
Now, 12 days after arrival, no further losses, everyone doing fine.
They are temporarily living in guest bathroom bathtub. I have a 18x24in box with aluminum baking pan set inside, pine shavings for bedding. I made a cardboard ramp into 6x6 hole in box end, covered with small bubble wrap for traction up n down the slope.
I bt 2 plastic feeders, base dish, flying saucer top with access holes all around. One feed, one water.
Feed is medicated chick starter/grower. I feed abt 2x per day, never letting bowl empty. Water many times a day.
So far i can pick them up and they dont seem overly fearful, once in hand. Not sure if i can expect they will ever be finger perchers, but i hope at least they recognize me as their god of food, water and clean sheets at nite!
Its getting close to 90° during many days, and im wondering how long to wait b4 getting them outside, and whether they can deal with west palm beach summers.
Ill have to get back to you on the breeds. For now, i bt 2 bunches of eggers, one yellow, one blues? Through tractor supply, maybe Holland is grower.
N e how, having a ball so far!
