I am trying an alternative approach to runs that are designed with sand. What I did is I build a super large run(25' x 30')area and I have tried to limit my self to only 14 hens and 1 rooster. That way I have about 50 s/f per chicken. The idea is to create a similar atmosphere to being free range except in a safe environment.

Here is a pic of my run which they have been occupied for about 8 weeks. The vegetation is holding up good so far. I also have a small separate run which is 8ft x 8ft that I added sand and dirt just for the purpose of dust bathing

Very nice, similar to what I want to do. you may lose one or two to hawks though.

4 hens? Uhm, you seem to have just a few more that that.........

I love it. I bet your chickens are incredibly happy. My chickens are jealous!

Very authoritative looking rooster there. There seem to be certain plants they do not like much and have allowed to grow to a mature height.

My birds have eaten all the clover out of their pasture first. It must taste good.

I noticed they are leaving some of the plants as well... I have debating taking a weedeater and trimming these down a bit not to shade the other clover and such... What do you think?
