Progress thread, coop design and building

BTW, how do you paste only part of the thread you want to comment? That is a neat way to reply.
Highlight the part of post you want, then click the pop up 'quote' or 'reply'.
...or quote/reply the whole post and edit before hitting 'posting reply'.
At least that's how it works on a laptop, not sure about mobile devices.

We are planning to have 10 chickens plus 1 rooster. Winter hardy and heavy egg layers. So far we are considering 2-3 of each of these:
- barred rock
- australorp
- Orpington (which color?)
- Wyandotte (which color?)
- Rhode Island Red
Which rooster out of these breed would be a good choice?

Any input/comment on this selection will be highly appreciated.
thanks

I have almost finished the chicken coop. The platform is raised about 1 ft above the ground and sits on 4 4x6 posts with 4x6 headers. It is pretty much as I made initial sketch for it. I still need to finish the chicken door, add a shutter on the north side for the 5 ft2 ventilation area (will close only in cold months of winter). There are other three ventilation areas (5 ft2 on the south side (above the nesting box) plus about 3 ft2 on each gable. Also, upper part of window is moveable and it adds about 3 ft2 ventilation area (open only in summer).
Here are some pictures of the progress. I don’t know why some came 90 degrees rotated! Didn’t know how to correct it.

Love the overhang from the eaves.

Hope your kids LOVE helping with the chickens as much as they seemed to love "helping" you!
Yes, my grandchildren are just thrilled with little chicks. I am sure they will help with many things they need. We ended up with 4 Australorp, 2 each of Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpington and Plymouth Barred Rock. They are all pullets (?), but we may have a surprise. If not we plan to get one rooster.
