Hello fellow chicken lovers. I am new to this and I am having an issue with my hen. She has a prolapse since yesterday 3-19-14. I removed her from the rest of the flock and cleaned her back end with warm water, applied neosporin and prep h gel and bag balm so she was nice and lubed up. Put her in a crate in the house over night. She is eating and drinking well. This morning she still has the prolapse. So I took her out of the crate and repeated the process once again and tried to push the tissue back inside and in doing so I could feel an egg. Not necessarily a large one. Normal size. I tried to help her to pass the egg or retrieve it but was unable. So I lubed her up again gave her some food and crushed egg shells, fresh water and put her back into the crate covering the crate to make it dark in hopes she would be able to lay the egg. It has been about 4 hours and still no egg. Her prolapse is still on the outside of her body and her tail is straight up and her muscles are contracting trying to expel the egg. But still no egg. Can anyone send me anymore suggestions I am new at this sort of thing and we have no vet in our area. Henny could sure use our help and I hope I don't loose her.
Thank you, Henny Pennie

Welcome to BYC. Try another hot bath for thirty minutes, up to the bottom of her wings. If you have a Tums or calcium tablet, give one to her. Chickens won't live more than 2 days egg bound, so you might still be able to help her. Vets can collapse the eggs and get them out, but it is risky if the egg has a shell which could cut the cloaca or vent tissue. Honey can also be used to help shrink the vent tissue and help to push in the prolapse. The longer a prolapse stays out, the more drying out the tissue gets, and chances of the tissue dying are more. Good luck to you in helping your hen.

Update: So Thankful to post this update. Henny just laid the egg. It did have some blood on the outer shell, however it was in tacked, not broken. It was an average sized egg. Her prolapse is still on the outside. I am planning to now put her in a warm bath to clean her up a bit in hopes those muscles will relax and go back in place and stay there. I will also re-dress the area with neosporin and prep h and keep her in the crate again, in the dark, in hopes she stops laying to give this a chance to heal. She deserves a few days at the spa anyway. I will post more tomorrow..... Henny Pennie
P.S. Oh just saw the post to my original post. Thank You so much for replying to me and thank you for the advise and suggestions. I will try all those things. Thank you..Thank you...Thank you

Great to hear! Keep us posted on her progress. Keeping her in a dark room or covered cage 16 hours a day may help stop egg production, but it may take a couple of days. This would give her time to heal if you can get the prolapse back in. It may take some pushing, and it probably will come back out, but just push it back in.
