Well, I lost another turkey lastnight.
Some of you know about the turkeys I got from someone besides Carla.
I got 24 turkeys from this guy, they have all dead and have took most of the group I got from Carla at Afton with them. Well, last night I lost another one and I just finally reach the boiling point so I call the local OSU office to get it tested. The agent was out of pocket so he referred me to a local Argi agent that does all the testing for the fair and poultry event for several counties around here. He coming to my farm tomorrow to get the turkey and ship it to Tx for testing. I told him I was going to have 300 turkeys next year and want to be sure I had treated the land if the turkeys I got from his guy had something bad. He agreed I was doing the right thing. I have let his guy ( the person I bought them from) know his bird dead and took others with them. And he refuses to do anything but give me more of his birds at the same time he says he lost all of his that he hitched this year. Dud, why would I want more sick birds next year.
If after this test I have prof his birds are bad and he does nothing but want to repay me with sick birds, I will let the board know who he is so you can decided if you want to deal with him. He goes to a lot of auction to so in the spring you may need to watch for his birds.
I want to be fair so will keep his name and where he from to myself until the test come back. But I am really red head mad now. So, when I have some answers he better be prepared for a mad women call.

First of all, honestly - don't buy birds from auctions. You might rarely get a good bird, but most of the time you're getting auction birds - and all their problems. Buy poults from a clean hatchery, do NOT raise them anywhere near your chickens. Turkeys get black head bad from chickens, and chickens can get it back.

I am really sorry to hear about your losses though.

Lightning- Sorry for you loss, I think it's hard anytime you put that much effort and time into something to have it die. Good luck.--

Beth-Thanks for checking in. She is still holding on.

3Horses- She is still holding on, her vent is looking pink and still red blood. The only scabbing is on the underneath side and I have used a water bottle filled with sterile water and used the almost stream and kept spraying until it was clean and pink. I have numbed it, prep h'ed it and used antibiotic ointment on it. Honestly, I am getting a bit tired of it all. She is eating, pooping, laying eggs and drinking water. Other then her insides hanging out I wouldn't know she had a thing wrong. I will give her one more day and see how it goes.

Thank you for all of your help. Strawberry has been culled. I tried for almost 4 days w/o any success. She was definitly not fat so, it must have been premature laying or something such as that. I feed oyster shell every day with the food and have it if they want it all the time in the coop.

On the good side of things I learned how to process a chicken. I never thought I would be able to do that to a beloved pet but, I did.

Well, I'm sorry you lost her. The move you made was certainly a sound one as far as chickens go - just sorry you had to do it. But I'm glad you have a good attitude about it. Sounds like she was just going to continue to lay huge eggs which is sometimes a problem.

There's a reason I like my smaller eggs sometimes. I worry less about them.

I admire you Andrea - you've had a hard time with your chickens and I know you're busy with school and work and your family...I'm proud of you!
