Hey everyone,

This is my first time dealing with a prolapsed vent. She is a 1.5year old mixed breed, noticed yesterday morning she had a prolapsed vent. I immediately separated her from the flock, brought in our basement, cleaned up her bum, lubed up and pushed it back in and applied preparation H. Haven’t offered her any food in hopes of breaking the egg cycle, have offered her water...
She’s been in our dark basement for 24hours now and I’ve had to push it back in 5-6 times; as soon as she poops it comes back out, this morning she pushed it back out as soon as I pushed it back in.
How long do I give her until it seems deemed that it won’t stay in? Am I just fighting a loosing battle? I’ve read other threads where they will stay in, but I seem to not be having such luck..
Any input is appreciated!

I think it’s time to vet personally but some will wait a week. Cleanse outside with saline then use KY jelly to insert. Give plenty of water.

I’m currently having a similar experience. I was away for five days and came home to this. Every time she poops it pops back out. I think you should at least be trying to get something with calcium in her as apparently that helps.

@KLandon16 how is your hen doing at this time? I had not seen this thread yet until now. It can take a few days to get the prolapse to stay in. If vet care is available, they can sometimes put in a couple of temporary stitches to keep the prolapse inside.
Today is day 5 of her “lockdown” as I’m calling it. The first 3 days I pushed it back in at least 5-6 times a day and she would just push it right back out.. I then just decided to apply the prep h around and inside the vent to see if I could get the swelling to come down maybe she wouldn’t push it out each time.
Tonight it looks much less swollen, she did also lay an egg today which is the first one since Saturday. She gets daily bum soaks in the evening and her food has been cut back which she is not happy about lol
I’m doing the best I can working full time, I want to give her as much time as she needs to hopefully save her. Taking her to the vet isn’t an option for me as there are t any local vets that deal with chickens, I tried before with another bird.
Any other suggestions or pointers? I will snap a pic of it next time I have her out just to see if anyone thinks this might be salvageable.
Thanks all!

Mine was doing the same each time I pushed it back in. We are on day 5 of her “lockdown” and today it looked much less swollen then before. I finally gave up pushing in and instead just applied ALOT of prep h in and around in hopes that if I could get the swelling down maybe she would leave it in. I’ve also been soaking her every night and she gets a crushed up tums in the morning with some yogurt. I’m trying my best working full time and not having a local vet that will treat chickens.
Don’t give up hope! I’ll update the thread when I can

It sounds like she is improving. Just take it a day at a time. Every case is different, so I hope that she gets back to normal. You can get them to temporarily stop laying by placing them in a dark room overnight for 16 hours a day, letting them out for 8 hours a day to eat, drink, and walk around.

Make sure that you fix any dietary imbalances for your birds. A balanced ration with separate oyster shell, and few treats, so their mineral balance is good.
Some hens will prolapse and not do fine, so be prepared for failure too. It's not your fault, but a risk with laying hens sometimes.
Mary
