Why have I lost two chickens to prolapse? Theyre both year old, a lavender and an Americana , they eat healthy Harvest non gmo 17% protein and table scraps for snacks sometimes. They are not free range but have lots of room(there’s only 4 of them total, now two☹️), and I try let them out of their run every day and they like to just go to their favorite bush and take a dirt bath. What am I doing wrong? I tried to push the second ones vent back in and I did keep it in for a few hours and she was able to drink some and rest but overnight, (she was isolated), she would not stop pushing it out. We are really sad over here.we had such a great year They survived a very cold winter they’ve been producing lots of eggs with no supplemental sunlight and I just can’t figure out why in the past month we’ve lost two. Thank you in advance for your help

Sorry for your loss. Have their prolapses just never stayed in? Were any egg bound? Were they pecked at by others before you found them? Does your feed have 4% calcium as a layer feed? Do you provide crushed oyster shell for free taking? Are they overweight at all? Many of today’s best layers can suffer from prolapse, egg binding, and other reproductive disorders. Here is some info about prolapsed vents:

Thank you so much. I didn’t know the first one was prolapsed until after she died and I looked her over. I’m still such a new chicken mom that with her, she was just panting and lethargic and so we isolated her and she died quickly. It was fast. That was 3 weeks ago. So yesterday my second one was bleeding so I saw right away she was severely prolapsed. I kept pushing it in and she kept pushing it out. I felt no egg in there and she had just layed one a few hours earlier. She just wouldnt stop pushing. I actually read the same article you just sent me already yesterday(thank you it is very helpful) and I used hydrocortisone and she looked ok for a few hours. She even started drinking water again. I held her for as long as as I could and kept my hand in place to keep everything in. But as soon as we went to bed I’m assuming she pushed all night. Ugh. I ordered the oyster shells they’re on their way. Calcium in the feed is at 3.55 and 4.55. I thought that was plenty and didn’t need any supplement. I guess I was deadly wrong. I’m sad
