Hi All,
I have a RIR hen, about a year old, that has presented with a prolapsed port (best I can tell). I have attached a few pics below so you can see what I'm seeing. She was passing an egg when I discovered the condition and it is out now but the port has not withdrawn. It's been this way for a little over 24 hours now. There is a hard substance on the exposed port that will not wash off and there are small amounts of blood around the problem area. She doesn't appear to be in pain (no noise) but she keeps attempting to pull the port back in: it moves in and out, though not all the way. There is no egg in the line as I can tell, at least not in danger of coming out any time soon.
I've read a lot of the posts about this condition so I have separated her from the flock, cleaned her off with a warm bath, trimmed some of the feathers around the area to clean it off better, fed her calcium and kept her in the dark to halt egg production (??).
Do I need to push the port back in? Is there a medicine that fixes this?
I'm at a loss and don't want her to suffer but not quite ready to harvest her yet. To me that's a last resort.
Suggestions? Advice? I'm sitting at my desk awaiting some sage advice.
Mike
