Prolapsed vent—egg folded inside

Anything that belongs inside of the vent, leave alone other than to keep it moist as you've been doing. On the other hand, any crusty poop or scabby tissue on the exterior should be removed. Stubborn buildup can be softened by using Dawn dish detergent full strength. Let it sit on the crusted areas for ten minutes, then use warm water and a wash cloth to scrub it away. More undiluted Dawn can be used on any stubborn material. This includes poop and also scabbed over injured tissue.

Update: You were right!

It was a soft “shell” that detached. I soaked her again today and while cleaning her up and using ointments separated the two successfully. Smell has been deadly. Pics attached!

My question is all the build up against her skin—looks like ridges and rot, will that need to be removed or will she shed that as well? Just not sure how much of what’s left is good.

generously applied antibacterial ointment inside and out, put cortisone in a mask and put that around her back end. She got 400 mg calcium today and approx 100mg cephalexin. Getting her feistiness back.
You are doing a wonderful job!

I think I would slowly work on that buildup as suggested in Post#22 and Post#23

I agree, the tissue underneath all of it looks very good!

I have never seen anything like this, I would have not even thought that was an egg or lash material that was sticking out! It's very interesting, so if you are willing, please take photos to document your progress. It will be helpful for Me (all of us) and future readers too.

Is it possible she has a fistula? She’s still pooping from the side and not the actual vent revealed behind that ruptured egg.

So good to see her healthy pink cloaca inside the material around her vent. I agree, I would continue to soak and clean off the smelly material, while also softening it with ointments.
She’s not pooping from her cloaca, do you think she has a fistula?

O.K.
The Large Intestine and The Oviduct both connect at the "cloaca" or "vent".

Bear with me...photos coming up :D

See this image - you have the large intestine meeting at the cloaca (vent), the "upper" tube is the Oviduct (Reproductive system).
Both meet and both have their own "opening" at the vent.

This is a Quail, but their reproductive and intestine system is the same as a chicken.

This little one had a full prolapse - you can see both the large intestine opening and the reproductive opening. These are "housed" right inside of the Vent/Cloaca.

So, yes, you will see poop/leakage coming around the side because the intestinal opening is still basically inside the vent which is good thing. You do not want a full prolapse with both openings protruding.

Fascinating! Thank you so much!

Edited to add:

Just to clarify:

If poop is not coming out the vent/cloaca, and you can see the vent is healthy and intact, the only other way I could see it coming out a different hole is through a fistula, otherwise you would see a protrusion coming out of the vent and she would be pooping out the side of the protrusion, right?
