Prolapsed Vent -- Vent Gleet? Both? Something else? *Graphic*

Clearly, this isn't normal... Im not sure if its gleet, if she has an egg broken inside of her, what the heck is going on, but I feel terrible and I need to fix her because the next option is going to be to cull her.

So it appears now that she has an egg in there. I gave her a 20 minute soak with Epsom salt. Then when I was getting ready to attend to the vent that area was very hard. And when I put my finger into the vent I can feel an egg... I massaged her abdomen a bit, but she seemed uncomfortable

If she is able to poop, then hopefully you have some time.
I would soak for 15 minutes or so then let her rest. She needs to stay hydrated.
Extra Calcium can help with the prolapse and contractions if she has an egg stuck too.
The swelling at the abdomen makes me think she has a reproductive problem too, but that could also be fat, hard to tell.

Let her rest well between soakings so she is not too stressed. She needs to be fairly warm 75F or so.

Hopefully she will pass what's in there. All you can do is continue what you are doing.
I can't stress enough that she needs to be drinking. If you have some Poultry Nutri-Drench or similar vitamins, give her a direct dose at 1 cc per 3 pounds of weight daily for a few days.

For the vent, some of it looks torn as well. The Prep H may help reduce some of the swelling, but that can take time. If she prolapses again and tissue is exposed, it may not go back in immediately. If it doesn't, then keep the tissue moist with you Prep H or you can use an anti-inflammatory cream. Swollen tissue often has to reduce in size in order to go back and stay in.

Keep us posted on her progress.

We have an egg!

I've soaked her, massaged her, gave her tums and finally helped her pass the egg. She is worn out and exhausted and in her dark crate to rest.

The egg did have another shell forming around it. Should I be concerned of more pieces inside of her? Or will her body absorb it? They were very soft so I'm not worried they will cut her insides up.

Wonderful News
Soft shells are harder to pass. Keep her vent lubed while you have her crated. Check it often and see if there’s any more shell visible IF it’s soft it’s okay to GENTLY pull it out.
Ima’ so happy for you!
Let her rest. If you don’t offer oyster shell to your hens now is the time to start!
It’s a good day!!:highfive:

I'm going to rest as well. That was exhausting! How long do you think it will be until she eats? Poor girl.

I will start putting oyster shell in the coop. Out of my 5 chickens she is the only one that has the softest most brittle shell. I break them all the time just doing something as simple as washing them off.... she lays the largest egg as well.

Keeping her hydrated is important. There’s a few additives out there to boost her system personally I always keep little packets of Save A Chick on hand to mix up as I might need them. (Easy to find too)
Once she’s rested she should perk up and eat. Offer favorites to start something soft would be good. Canned corn? Tuna? Soaked feed and warmed a bit in the microwave?
You did a great job!
Now you deserve a nice warm soak and your favorite treat ;)

No her body will not absorb the shell if there is another one in there.
Just keep a watch on her.
She needs hydration and rest. Once she is drinking, then offer her her normal feed. That can be made into a wet mash if you wish. A nice treat of egg is usually well received.

I would still give her Calcium for another few days. TUMS or 1/2 tablet Caltrate.
IF she still has swollen tissue - I'm sure she does, keep that moist with Prep H and monitor the vent where it's torn and has been picked on for signs of infection.

If she is not lethargic and perks up later in the day, then she would likely benefit from another 15 minute epsom salt soak.

Photos of her poop would be good and if she has any discharge. The worry would be the contents of the previous egg or eggs spilled into the oviduct. This can cause infection.
IF she were mine, I would consider giving her a round of antibiotics you can order Amoxicillin online or get some from your vet. Dosage is 57mg per pound of weight given 2 times a day for 7 days.

Multiple shells? I’ve heard of people getting a egg inside of a egg. If that’s not the case, I don’t know what is. Well, good luck.

Sad news everyone... she didn't make it. I guess it was too much for her little body to handle. but thank you so much for all the wonderful advice. Hopefully this never happens again but if it does I have so much more knowledge to press on with.

Ohhhh No! :hit
I’m so sorry. You did everything you could. And yes it’s a sad sad lesson. I live so far out that it’s necessary for me to treat mine too. I understand how you feel. Dangitt I really thought there might be a chance :he
You’ve gained hands on experience and some knowledge and if it makes you feel any better every thing I’ve learned I had to learn it the hard way. I still learn everyday.
Be sure to follow up and get that oyster shell. Just put a dish out by their feeder.
So sorry ~ Dangitt :hugs
