Prolapsed vent - vet unable to get back in so far šŸ˜

We noticed today that our 2yo Australorp started straining right after we gave her deworming medication (sheā€™s very highly strung and got very stressed out over it), and when we looked we saw she had a prolapsed vent. I put her in some warm water as her butt was all poopy to try and get a good look, but she got stressed out over that too so I just took her straight to the vet. They had to sedate her because she was so nervous, but were still unable to get it back in. While she was there she passed a yolky mass and soft eggshell membrane. Sheā€™s currently on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds, and they are going to try in the morning with the other specialist there too. Does anyone have any experience with their hen having surgery for a prolapse? Is there any way to manage a prolapse long term? Iā€™m trying to think ahead so I can make the best decisions for her tomorrow if they canā€™t get it back in. Iā€™d do anything to save my sweet girl, but obviously I donā€™t want her to pointlessly suffer. She was acting pretty normally today other than the straining, I just assumed theyā€™d be able to pop it back in. No pics Iā€™m afraid as it was all a big rush.

I am so sorry about your bird. :hugs

This article may be of help for your girl, I hope she is doing better now?

Thank you. Sadly after several days in the hospital we had to put her to sleep, she was suffering too much šŸ’”. I agreed to a necropsy before bringing her home and Iā€™m glad I did. She had a massive malignant inoperable tumor šŸ˜©. Poor sweetheart turned two just the day before, itā€™s tragic. At least we now know we made the right call

I meant to say that the prolapse and infection was all secondary to the tumor, and the tumor is why they were having issues with treating it - when they turned her in her back it was causing it to squash her little heart and lungs, hence her distress. Such a pretty girl.

Oh gosh, I am so sorry. :hugs But you did the right thing by putting her down, and I am sure she knows how much you loved her. :hugs
