prolapsed vent

I'm sorry about your hen. This can be a hard thing to deal with. Most of the time in the past, these hens were put down. Nowadays, if they are backyard pets, we try to save them, but sometimes they don't get better. Many people don't have the time to spend dealing with this, only to recur. Bathing just her bottom in Epsom salts will help keep her clean. If you do a search on prolapse at the top of this page , you will see a lot of threads about the subject, and how others have faired. I hope she gets better, but sometimes they have to be put down if it doesn't get better.

Well, Miss Rose, sadly, is no longer with us. I worked with her for a week and every day she would prolapse again. It's so hard, I get so attached. My husband said chicks would make me feel better but I don't know. At least with dogs and cats you can take them to a vet.

I'm so sorry to hear about Miss Rose. We are going through this now, and I do have a vet that I can go to. I don't understand how it could happen so fast. Because she was in the house today, I realized that she had not laid an egg for over a week.

Do you have many chickens? I started with 9, lost 3 to hawks, and now have 15 of which only 6 were laying til last week. The rest are 20 weeks old.

again,

More heartbreak. I just need to talk to people who understand. My husband and I came home yesterday to find dead chickens scattered all over the yard. Two dogs were in the barn chasing our few remaining chickens. Twenty of 30 chickens were killed. We just started our flock 3 years ago and most of them were pets. Our favorite pasttime was to sit on the back porch and watch the antics of the chickens.
We live on a farm with no close neighbors. My husband thinks someone dropped these dogs off. They were starving and had mange. I hope the dog catcher finds them. We are devastated.

Sadly, "Mans best friend" is chicken murderer number one. It is very sad to lose your birds especially in this way. Nothing is going to take away the pain but time and even then loss is still loss. My condolences. If it were me, I'd absolutely have shot the dogs. Better security for the chickens is important, even paramount to raising happy healthy chickens. Do not lose heart. Get more chickens and practice better animal husbandry. You wont regret it. Best wishes.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've lost many a chicken from stray dogs. I do wish people were responsible and would at least take their unwanted pets to animal shelters instead of dumping them and letting them basically starve to death. :(

I have free range chickens, their eggs are so good. They are very secure at night but then the attack was in the daytime. I dont want penned chickens. . I did shoot at one of the dogs this morning and thought i missed it but I didnt. Thanks for the condolences.

I'm so sorry for all of your loss. I can't even imagine losing so many girls at one time :( Hug your remaining ladies tonight.
