Prong Collar?! Tell Me About Them.

What kind of dog? Most dogs are only trained til something goes wrong.

I have a few now deceased that were harness trained as well as the current group...

American Staffordshire terrier 65#
Wire haired pointer/weimaraner cross (2 brothers) 125# when Jack passed away. Sparky was 115#.
Bloodhound 100# and still growing
Pit husky 60#
German Shepherd/retreiver cross 85#
Coon hound/airedale cross (100#)
Malamute (3 of those)

Yup that about sums it up. There were 2 that were adults when they came here and walked fine with either a collar leash or a harness. They weren't as big either.

Edited to add a couple pics cause ..... Doggies.

Obviously not all of them lol.

Well that’s an impressive number of dogs to have that never pulled with a harness. There’s always exceptions and there’s always people that can train dogs well enough to not be on a leash at all. The reality is most do not and the fact the OP is asking about a prong collar and getting a husky puppy leads me to believe they’re not an expert. I could be wrong but still wouldn’t recommend a harness on a husky.
I’ve owned Dobermans with high drives and Dobermans with hardly any. So the size especially weight doesn’t mean a whole lot. I currently have a 65 lb malinois female that is easily stronger and has way higher drive than both my last 80 - 90 lb male Dobermans. I’m not saying she pulls when walking but the drive in her is unreal but I specifically paid for this working line dog. So as I already said the drives in certain dogs is the biggest factor especially when something unexpected could happen when out for a walk.

It definitely takes a consistent leader to train them.
Mine pulled of course while in training. There were days I wanted to give up for sure.
Luckily mine caught on and are polite now. I doubt I could go through training another anytime soon. These keep me quite busy.
The American Staffordshire took a leash on her collar as a challenge. She was horrible about pulling on a collar leash. The body harness for her was life changing.

I guess what I am trying to say is there is SOMETHING that will work for each dog but not every dog will respond to a specific collar type the same way. One just has to find what THAT particular thing is for their dog.

To put it in even better context I might use a retractable leash on my own dogs occasionally but wouldn’t recommend them to very many people with bigger dogs. Just because some of us can do it doesn’t mean everyone can. Theres about 1500 videos online now with all the doorbell cameras in use of people being yanked off their own porch when they bring their dog out for a walk because they wanted to chase something. Most likely a training issue but everyone’s idea of a trained dog varies widely.

I know a lot about huskies so please do not think that I am some impulsive buyer. I have been researching for months and have been calculating the prices. My family even has a vet ready even though we do not have her yet and will be remodeling our house soon before we get her. We will be moving small items, adding doors, changing the flooring, etc. I have been researching for a long time and I am no greenhorn to dogs and their temperament. It is just that nobody is perfect, it is not bad that I do not know what a prong collar is.
Heck, I just asked for people's thoughts about prong collars because it is nice to communicate with other people to see what they think. A video or website is one person's opinions. More people, more sides, here on BYC is better.

Yes, the difference between your average dog and good working line dogs, GSD, Malinois, Dutchies, is night and day. They give it their all, always, and do not quit easily, no matter how hard or dangerous the job at hand is. Unfortunately sometimes they make up their own "jobs", and then you gotta figure out how to convince them otherwise, LOL.

I didn’t mean not being an expert or knowing what a prong collar is as a bad thing. I also didn’t mean or say anything about you being an impulse buyer. You’re reading more into what I said.
I am just saying like others have said that training a dog that likes to work to walk on a leash with a harness might not be the best idea. The fact is with a harness on that dog can really pull hard if it wants to especially while still training to ignore distractions like other dogs, cats, chickens, wildlife etc...

I tried a Gentle Leader with my pup. He never got used to it, no matter how long we trained. Spent the whole walk trying to get it off. Like I said, now we use the Gentle Harness. What a difference! He enjoys his walks now, so do I. And I can train him easier because I have his attention better. Like it was said before, every dog is different, every trainer has their own opinion. All you gotta do is figure out what works best for you both and keep at the training!
