be sure to include my observation that my steel sided pole barn was maintaining 70 F at a 30 F outside air temperature, without supplemental heat.

Interesting info. I believe that it all depends on how many birds you have, what your coop is made of, and how well it's made... lots of variables. I have not added heat yet, but the heat-loss (body heat from the chickens) has been slowed dramatically with the insulation. If you put chickens in your coop, you're heating your coop, period. Which is why I have more chickens than I should.
