Does anyone know how to propagate fig trees?
Or roses?
I have 1 fig tree that I would like to turn into 2 so I can double my fig production. And a mini rose bush.

I accidentally propagated a hydrangea stem while trying to dry it in water. I know that sounds backwards but you put them stem in water with the petals on it and by the time the water is gone the petals are dried out and nice looking. Well instead of the petals drying out like they should have the stem started to grow sprouts. Is it similar with roses and figs?

Thanks!

A few kinds of plants can be rooted in water, but roses and figs aren't among them.

Miniature roses are usually grown on their own roots, and are fairly easy to root. When a flower fades, cut a 2 - 4 inch piece of the stem the flower was on. If there are any leaves on the bottom inch or so of the stem, strip them off, but leave 2 or 3 leaves. If you have rooting hormone, treat the bottom inch of the stem with it, and stick the cutting in moist potting soil or perlite (poke a hole in the soil with a pencil to keep from rubbing the hormone off the stem, and press the soil around the stem firmly enough to prevent air pockets). I have done this in 4" pots, and covered the pot with a zip lock bag to make a tiny greenhouse. Keep the cutting in bright light but not direct sunlight, with moist but not wet soil and high humidity, and you should see signs of roots in 2 - 3 weeks (new top growth is a good indicator).

Figs can be rooted in a similar manner, but you do it in winter when there are no leaves on the plant. Cuttings of 6" to a foot in length are taken, some say let them sit in cool, humid conditions for a couple of weeks to form a callus, others say stick into rooting medium directly after cutting (once again, rooting hormone is beneficial). Bright but not direct light, high humidity, when you have good, vigorous growth, plant 'em out.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

Thank you so much! That makes so much more sense than ANYTHING I googled!
I'm going to try to do the miniature roses this weekend.

PS. What kind of bunny do you have? I have a mini lop. Rabbits are just the funniest animals, other than chickens of course.

Pop the cuttings for figs in The dirt straight away. the Roses in a Plastic brown bag for a week i use the jar and a little root tone this is how i even get my gift rose stems to root for me DAY 1 is when i start Good luck.

I've never been able to get roses to root, but I do fine with figs.

Here's the sure fire way to root figs. Take your cutting, about 1 ft to 18 inches long, and bury all but the very tip sideways in potting mix., Yes, almost flat on its side. Mine are just sloped enough to keep the upper tip out of the dirt. Keep the potting mix damp, but not soggy. wait patiently. You will get a healthy new fig tree.
