Pros and Cons for Guinea Pigs

Here is an article written by a long time breeder and wonderful author. We have this posted on our club site.

This author was my mentor in the cavy world. Cavy means guinea pig. I can't recommend them enough. They are herd animals just like horses/cattle and most livestock. So please make sure you get a pair. And don't listen to all the mis information on the internet that two boars cannot live together. In fact, I have four show boars that are happily living together and probably will for at least another year or more. I would recommend a boar any day for a pet over a sow. If you have any further questions and need someone with way more experience then the average pet pig owner, pm me.

Too bad you are not in Houston area. We have a huge Christmas show there tomorrow. Lots of breeders and beautiful show pigs in every color you can imagine.

edited because I am too tired to be typing! LOL

I used to have both hamsters and guinea pigs and I love them both.

As for guinea pigs, you have to keep up with the cleaning and it would smell pretty ripe after while if you dont. Hamsters are much better about it.

One thing I dont like is that they like to eat their own poop

Hmmm... a new potential pet!

I have hamsters, and they are easy easy to care for. Mine are even all potty trained over cat litter in a bottom of a plastic container. Will hop right in, go potty, and then climb up your hand to get ball time.

Don't rush getting a hammy at the store though, as you want to pick on personality over color. If you can grab it and it just looks dazed, great, that's a winner. If it flips over and tries to nip, move on. With hammies, go at closing time to see them really awake too.

I found 4 piggies online and a cage. I am waiting for the lady to call me about what time to meet her. I have had everything but rats and snakes growing up and now my 3 year old wants a guinea pig. They are pretty great little pets I might add.
