Pros and cons of peacocks

How do they get along with other fowl and how are they as neighbors? Are they loud?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Pros:
Beautiful
Mine have gotten along well with all the other birds (check my sig). Although the one cock has started chasing my Tom, we need to get a bigger pen built (just moved). Loud is a matter of opinion, they make a call, some people say it sounds like 'meow', 'hey you', during mating season or when disturbed, they also 'honk' when disturbed. We haven't had the neighbors complain yet

, and I think the roosters can be worse about all around noise, and then the guineas

, maybe we just have understanding neighbors.

Cons:
Need a bigger pen than chickens, if not free ranging (at least 10-ft wide and 6-ft high to accomodate the males train)
They can fly.
If free ranging they have been known to wander off. To curb that you can keep the female penned and just let the male out, or just make sure your property has the best food around.
Have heard about them attacking metallic blue cars (looks like another peacock) and roosting on cars, roofs etc. with resultant mess.

We love ours, and make a little money to help with their upkeep selling feathers and chicks (when we have them).

I wondered if you'd pick up on my post. I'm only gathering information at this point, I don't know if I could take the plunge.

So I'm basically not seeing any negatives except for pen size. I have guineas right now and understand noise issues - BIG TIME!!!! But I love them and the neighbors haven't moved in yet.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Excellent food for thought.

Get em before the neighbors move in!!

I have a trio and they are just lovely. I do have them penned in so they can't fly around and drive the neigbors crazy - personally I think that is very important.

I have a chainlink pen with a PVC pipe/bird netting cover that's about 15x30 or so, and their shelter is 8x10.

The noise issue really isn't that bad. With only one peacock, he does call occasionally to get the girls' attention, and they will call out if startled, but it's not like a dog barking continually, and they don't do it at night. AND it's the middle of breeding season now - the loudest time of year for them.

If you have guineas, I don't think the peafowl noise will bother you.

Also they don't eat near as much as chickens the same size - so they are not expensive to keep up.

I really like ours and very glad to have taken the plunge, as you put it!

We have had ours for about 6 years. Love'em....noise and all.....except they free range and eat our collard greens and green beans. And they like coming up to the front door for some bread.

Sounds like if I can handle guinea noise I can handle peacocks. Another HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. My incubator will be empty in a few weeks.

We had a turkey that scratched the you know what out of my sister's new blue Firebird!
