I haven’t had them too long, so I have a limited pros and cons list, haha.
Pros of coturnix quails:
- quiet (they make cute little piggy noises when I bring them food in the morning!)
- smaller footprint needed per bird
- lays eggs in just 2 months!
- will lay an egg every single day when conditions are ideal
Cons
- they. poop. so. much.
- Skittish. Even if you manage to get them to be somewhat tame, they will become skittish again after a few days of decreased interaction.
- will not return if accidentally let out of their enclosure

I'm still new at sexing, but I believe that Celadons and Pharoah are both sexually dimorphic and can be feather sexed. Males will have a rusty chest (according to their color) and females will have a striped/spotted chest. Otherwise you'll have to vent sex them, which has you flip the birds onto their back and press the vent. If it's bulbous and a foam comes out, it's usually a male.
ETA: I believe Celadons are simply a bird with the blue egg gene. Not sure about Pharaohs if they're just slang for 'Regular brown coturnix quail' or they're jumbo sized birds. More experienced folks can correct me on that![]()
celadons come in all colors. I could show you mine when i get home! Mine are in silver pharoah, silver, rosetta, tibetan tux, pharoah, gold and english white to name a few. They all lay blue eggs, it’s the blue eggs that makes them “celadon”Aren't celadons brown with white breast? Or is that the colour Tuxedo? Lol I'm a bit confused.
Would it work if I vent sexed them at 1day old and seperate the males from females?
I'm sorry, but pharaoh is a colour, not a species. Coturnix japonica and coturnix coturnix are the ones that we've domesticated and are interbreedable.Pharaoh quail are the wild and slightly smaller version of Japanese,
coturnix is the class, pharaoh is the species

I'M IN LOVE WITH THE TUXEDO CELADONS![]()
