Pros and Cons of RIR's

thanks guys. Now here's the kicker. My husband has no clue I'm headed to the store to "look" at the babies that arrive at the store tomorrow. I'm sure I'll find a "sick" or "weak" one or two that I have to care for at home, right?

Sometimes husbands can rain on our parade so i say dont take him along and dont tell him you are going. Just happen to come home with some free baby chicks that really needed to come home with you LOL! That is how it started here and since they were so little he didnt bat an eye and now that we get free eggs he doesnt mind the feed bill so much LOL! And with the occasional chicken dinner it is a win win situation LOL!

I know right! How come my husband can't come home with strays and say "can we keep them?" I'd always say yes. lol He really does understand my need for pets, and he enjoys them too, but I guess my sacrifice is that I'm the one doing all the cleaning up after them.

I found our RIR's to be noisy and bossy.
And they refused to stay in our large fenced
in yard. They always jumped it and took off.
( I know this doesn't apply to you)

I don't know if that's common or not,
but I wanted a calmer, quieter breed
this time. And heavier so they'll stay in
the yard when I let them out.

Our RIR Hazel was the sweetest little girl (below) until she started laying; then she turned mean and started feather picking. It turned out that she was too cramped (we live in the city) and just needed to free-range all the time, which we unfortunatly could not supply. So now she lives with Frozen Feathers. Too bad because she was nice to us and a great layer.

My first chickens were RIR and they were great birds. They were my favorite before I met my marans. RIRs are versitile and will do well caged or ranged. They also are good foragers and have a good food/meat,egg conversion. They are considered a dual purpose bird, so the extra roosters can be used.

My rirs lay an egg almost every day and are nice most of the time. We do have one rir that will chase you sometimes but doesn't that much anymore. They don't eat very muck feed if you let them free range. Here are my rir hens -

I just picked up my RIR's however I don't think they are all RIR's. I posted it under "What other breed do I have" or something like that. I have pictures if you want to chime in for me??

Thanks

I have my RIRs enclosed in a run that is covered. They do tend to wander that is why I decided to build them the run. They can be noisy especially when I think they are going broody but they are just faking me out the little hieffers LOL!
