Pros and Cons of Roosters...

Thank you for all the responses! I talked it over with my mom and she did not like the idea, the thing is that of course that he doesn't lay eggs and we have a dog for protection. We barely have any hawks and my only predator concern are coons and neighbor dogs. My dog is a sweetheart and will not fight with other dogs etc, but she has a big bark that scares most things away. As far as breeding, my friends mom said that if we ever got a rooster that she would get chicks from us, we would not breed him for us because I don't think my dad is going to make any more coops.

As far as crowing, I have one neighbor that said that she would not mind to hear crowing, but I am not to sure about our other neighbors. I personally like the sound of crowing. And if he got mean, I would have very few problems in getting rid of him.
I think he would have enough ladies to make him happy. We have 8 hens and might be rescuing 4 more hens that are a couple years old or so. So I don't think that there would be enough room in our coop. :( I do have a "coop" that can fit 2-4 chickens in it, I am going to use this for quarantining the 4 hens if we get them. There are a few pics of my "big" coop on my page if you want to see.

So I guess we would have no use for him. :(

But one word: HOPE! :)

with my rooster so mean when he was young he watched my older roo do stuff and then he did it until he beat the crap out of my older roo so he could be the alpha roo now he is sweet and nice to the hens i use him to get the girls to new places by giving him treats then he calls the rest over .. now i feel bad for my older roo he wants girls but the younger roo witch is around 8-9 months old now wont let him .. i have 8 roos right now most of pairs so the don't mate with the others .. the two that fight the most is the new alpha roo and the old one ... but i love my roos some are not to smart like my silkie roo he was running and ran into my bucket that i was carrying then walk away it was funny .. i have 32 birds 4 are ducks ... but most of the roos have pairs ... but i really like roos they can be sweet and friendly but can be very aggressive my roo attacks my mom when she goes in the coop until i go in then he walks away he knows im the boos but he is a baby he comes to me and gets up on my lap to eat treats and to make sure the others don't get them lol when i carry him around he just sits around sometimes falls asleep and he likes when i pet him so i hope he is like this until he dies.

There were some great replies! I like this rooster so, I think I'm going to keep him around for now and see how things go. How old are they when they start trying to mate? I only have 4 hens and want to be sure they are safe, happy and not stressed.

Since he's only 6 months old, I imagine he still has some maturing to do. Like ya'll have said.... we'll see what happens when the hormones kick in!

I also didn't realize that not all roosters crow the same! Right now my guy sounds more like an owl with something stuck in his throat. LOL. I just assumed that the real "crow" would come with time. I didn't read up much on roosters because I never thought I'd have one. Guess I've got some reading to do.......

Thanks for all the pointers!

That is good that you are going to keep him! Beautiful boy! :)

Well I checked the newspaper this week and it seems that he is gone. :( But my friend said that there was/is a rooster at a feed store nearby. Hehehe. :) Now I have to talk to my mom again. :p

Okay, I went to the feed store today and found an add for a free EE rooster that is a year old and is sweet and friendly. It had a pic of him, and he was so beautiful! Another one I want! :p :)

Every rooster is different, plain and simple. Beware of people giving ones away, but that being said I took one off a woman who had 3 including him. He was low roo and my White Rock died of a heart attack. I was in search of a of roo and put an add on CL. Got a bunch of hits but wasn't going to pay for one and being June people are usually looking to dump them. While his romantic side needed some work, just a tad rough although he has gotten better. Going from no hens to 16 well who can blame him. He always has an eye to danger he hasn't got an aggressive bone in his body, lets say he is a big chicken. He has never squared off to me or anyone and doesn't even raise his feathers if you corner him. Maybe because he was #3 where he came from. He doesn't try to get away once you catch him and is comfortable being there. Growls a little once you put him down. Any way what caught my eye on this thread was Buffcauna roo which is what mine is. Buff father Auracana mother. Roosters are somewhat of a crap shoot.
