Hello all!

My name is Angel! I’m 31, I live in a pretty rural area of North Carolina, and as you can see by the title of this thread, I have a very corny sense of humor LOL

I have no chickens. I have no coop. I have two dogs, Maltese’s, and I’m a bit terrified of what’s gonna happen when I DO eventually get chickens if they accidentally cross paths, especially because one of them has an obsession with squeaky toys, but I’ll do my best to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Anyway!

I’ve always wanted to raise some kind of farm animal. My mind’s kinda vacillated between goats and chickens for a few years, but given the world’s current circumstances I feel like chickens would be a really smart idea so that I could be assured of a decently steady source of protein with their eggs. Plus, I think I’ll be grateful for the sense of accomplishment from doing something with my hands, and I get to develop a relationship with these living and breathing creatures. Honestly, no matter how ya look at it, I don’t think you can go wrong with the idea!

I live on 17 acres, 3-4 of which is completely cleared, so I have the space for the chickens. We get fox and raccoons so I need to build something that’s super-durable - I’ve done some research about burying fence lines into the ground and covering the roof with wire in case of hawks. We have no fence, so I probably won’t free-range. I’m not sure that I can run electricity out to the coop, so I don’t think I can do a heat lamp during the winter months. Hopefully I won’t need it, but if I do, I’m sure I can get some good advice from people here.

I’m disabled from really severe chronic migraines, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and trigeminal neuralgia. I’m always been concerned that my physical stamina might not be up to the job of animal husbandry, but I think if I keep it down to like 4 hens, the responsibility and the work will be manageable. And, if it goes well, maybe the endorphins will actually help me feel better! Chronic pain becomes this cycle sometimes and you can’t break out of it. I’m hoping that maybe, bringing these chickens here will be a good reminder to me that I can still accomplish something even when I don’t feel 100% well.

Other than that, I play piano, I love to cook, and I’m hopefully going back to college this year (once schools open back up) to finish my nursing degree.

I can’t wait to embark on this new journey and gain some valuable wisdom and knowledge from people who have walked this path before!!

Hi Angel and welcome to BYC. Do a search for the “deep litter” method - it certainly reduces the labour involved in cleaning the coop. Here are some helpful links:
