Our little silkie chick is scheduled to have her leg amputated at the recommendation of our vet. The vet's a chicken specialist, so we're comfortable with her diagnosis and conclusions.
The next step is, well, what to do afterwards.
Based on what I'm reading, chickens can get around fairly well and have a good quality of life with a prosthetic, but there isn't a lot of information online about post-prosthetic care.
For example, how much do prosthetics interfere with egg laying? Our girl is losing her leg at the hock. I foresee some difficulty with trying to lie down properly with a prosthetic.
I'm also just generally curious about other people's experiences with prosthetics, and looking to get any advice I can. That includes any recommendations about where I can get a prosthetic. There are lots of options on Etsy, but if someone has purchased a prosthetic from someone before and can recommend them, that'd be great.
