Protecting your flock from predation. suggestions welcome, no comments

Okay, according to the OP comments are absolutely forbidden, but suggestions are welcome.

My suggestion is to learn a more tactful manner of posting so as to not alienate people by coming across as a "know-it-all". I appreciate the fact that you have put much time and effort into your posts, but your approach needs some work.

the idea of no comments is to discourage post that lengthen the thread without adding a new informative idea. many threads on this forum and other message boards are for discussion. i understand this and encourage it. however that was not my intent for THIS thread. for me i dislike finding a thread that has the information i want in it, but it's 300 pages long with the vast majority of the post reading "i totally agree" or some version of it or the discussion wanders off topic and i spend an hour reading and still don't get the info i'm looking for. i prefer to have some resource where i can go and find what i'm looking fore in a shorter amount of time. i was hoping for this thread to be a place to collect different ideas from the discussion threads and condense them here. this prevents you from having to read 50 threads to get the same information. suggestions as opposed to comments helps to improve the resource. and adds new, interesting, and helpful information. a more accurate description of no comments is comment but add to the thread what different you do to keep your animals safe.

i apologize for the deleted suggestion. i have seen others use that method and i did add a warning to it. as i will usually do if i think it may endanger a person or animal.

EDIT: figured i'd add the second trigger to this post instead of making a new post.

trap for large pests, dogs, coyotes, hogs and other Large animals.

you need a large cage. prefab chain link dog yards work well just add a top or a pole with a pulley near the back. a bungie cord. a long heavy gauge wire or light cable if using a post. a board at least 1"by 1" about 2 to 3 foot long, a hinge. a 2"X4" about 3 to 4 foot long with one end angle cut. a potato sack or burlap bag needs to be fairly sturdy.

first. select the location and set up the cage.

attach the bungie so it will pull the door closed quickly.

attach the hinge to the door and the 2"x4' so the angle cut sits flat on the ground. this allows the door to close and drag the board but when pushed from the inside the board digs in and holds the door close. like a chair under a door knob.

attach the wire to the 1"x1" and run it across the top of the cage or to the post through the pulley. hang the bag securely from the wire. let the bottom be about 3 or 4 feet off the ground.

place the bait in the bag. for those that raise meat birds the skin and guts make good bait. otherwise something that won't fall out of the bag that they would like.

since these are fairly large animals they are fairly strong. they bite and pull the bag trying to get it down. this pulls out the stick, the bungie closes the door and the 2X4 holds it closed.

I have been alerted to danger by guineas and a well behaved dog. Though the dog didn't bark or participate when our own beagles helped the neighbor's dog kill chickens. I guess she's no tattle tale.

Hey Grim, how about a BYC page of your ideas put into practice with pics. My BYC page is a "show & tell" of how my setup works for me and has been in use nearly two decades.

I use a deep brick foundation, buried run wire, tall run wire, fruit trees in the run etc. etc. etc.

Grim, I really appreciate your posts as well as how you feel about the threads... I won't say more than that or I will have prolly tick ppl off. Anyway, if you make a page with your info... As well as the many ways to kill rats... Lol... I would def check in to learn more

Very upset, Black Beauty (Wild Eastern hen) was killed today by (we are guessing) Coyotes. My turkeys usually roost in the trees. However, she had a nest of 19 eggs and had started sitting on them earlier this week. She was completely hidden under brush, it took me a while to find where her nest was because she was so camoflauged. I guess they could smell her... ):
