I had an injured quail that I placed in the same pen as my chicks for space sake. She seems to get protective of the chicks when I'm near. She doesn't attack but she does make this loud purring sound. No one hurts the other but now I'm a tad concerned Ed about how I will separate them later. It'll be fine right?

Sounds like her mommy instincts are kicking in. I think it will be okay, if you are concerned about her attacking when you try to separate, maybe wear some heavy gloves and long sleeves. :)

Quail have remarkably short motherhoods to begin with—it is unlikely she'll suffer more than a bit of moving stress when you take her away from "her" babies. Best of luck!
