Protein

I am in California and my girls like Modesto Milling’s organic, soy free, corn free grower crumble at 22% protein. First ingredient is milo, so I may look for something else, as I just learned milo is considered low grade.
Where are you buying your feed? I'm in SoCal and have been looking for sources for feed other than TSC

Thanks Gary...I just been looking on the net after I posted and found Star milling in Perris. I knew about the mill in Riverside but hate the traffic, come from being a trucker for thirty plus years :p . Am going to check out Star as I believe my girls are needing a bit more protien in their diet. Have a feather picking problem.

ops - that the additional protein in the feed is really helping them. Also - anyone feed Meatbird feed to layers?? (with oyster shell of course).
Yes, I've always fed meatbird to my layers with oyster on the side. For the small difference in price, I wouldn't feed anything else. They lay and molt well. I've switched it up a bit right now as I'm hatching, but the protein percent is still up around 20%.

Mosey2003 - thanks. I have switched to the Meatbird now. I compared ingredient tags (same brand) and the Layer and Meat bird are almost identical. Which I like because I get a lot of compliments on the flavor of my eggs (and I think they taste great too). And - the Meat bird is only .50 cents more! So, I think that the 20% protein will do them all good. And like you said, when molt time comes, I don't have to switch to a higher protein feed. Maybe just give additional high protein snacks to up the Protein even more. Something else that came to mind - calcium supplements are heavy in weight. Seems that if the Layer feed is loaded up with Calcium supplement, I am actually getting less "food" in a 50 pound bag since a good bit of that 50 pounds is actually calcium supplement. The meat bird bag of 50 pounds is actually more "food" since the entire 50 pounds are food ingredients. In my mind, I think the 50 pounds of meat bird is a better deal. I buy and provide the oyster shell anyway so I just feel like I am getting more bang for my "food" buck buying the meat bird. I know, I think too much, I have no life......
