A friend’s chicken has this protruding bump on the back of her neck. Her behavior seems normal otherwise. Does anyone know what this could be, and does it require treatment? Anything that can be done at home? Thanks in advance!

It could be a tumor, an ingrown feather cyst, or an abscess from a peck wound. How does it feel—hard, soft, or fluid filled? There is a mark visible on it.

If it is a tumor, there isn’t much that your friend could do about it. With an ingrown feather cyst, there can be an abscess with a feather inside and hardened pus.

Okay, if it’s an abscess, is there a treatment could she do?

She could disinfect the skin and lance it and see if it has solid pus inside or if it just bleeds. Bleeding would be more common with a tumor. Can she see a vet for advice?

I’ll pass that advice along! I’m not sure if there’s a poultry vet in our area, but I’ll pass that along too.
