Hey ya'll! I'm not only new to BYC, but I'm also a new back yard chicken owner. We have just about a quarter acre in the Puget Sound area of Washington State. I am very glad to have found this site as it is full of great information and helpful folks. I'm looking forward to further interaction. For now, I'm studying some of the coop designs posted here in hopes of finding something that will work just right for us. I'll post pics of the coop once it's built. Until then, here are the chicks I picked up from the post office this morning. Happy little peeps!

If you haven't already done so, check out the Learning Center...tons of information there and really helpful. One thing I'd caution you about is using newspaper in the brooder...it's too slick for their little legs and may cause problems. Some wood shavings would be a better option.

You might like to chat with other members in Washington state. If you type Washington in the search box, your state thread should pop up.

Thanks for joining us, hope you're having fun with the little ones!

Thanks for the reply. I was concerned about the news paper too but was following instruction from the hatchery. They suggested np on top of bedding, sprinkle food crumbles, and show them the feeder to ensure they start to eat. They made a mess of the paper quick! After a few hours it was out and now they are just on normal bedding. I can tell they are a lot more comfortable without the paper.

The learning center is great. The required reading was good too. Have to say I laughed out loud at the internet troll article. I'll spend some time exploring to see what else I can find! Thanks again!

It can be confusing when you get differing advice and you would think that the source of your birds would be a good source of information, but it isn't always the case -- for future batches an alternative to news paper is to use paper towels on top of bedding if you want to go that route at first while acclimating them to the brooder and orientating them to where feed/water is, etc. This is also helpful at times when you want to monitor the quantity and quality of waste being expelled by a bird for diagnostic purposes. The paper towel provides better traction than news paper.

Paper towels are also used in the early days, to cover the shavings on floor of brooder. Before chicks know what food is, they sometimes try eating the shavings. After they discover the feeder, you can remove the towel paper.
