We have a proven rooster that has been breeding excellently this year. He has given 80-93% on several clutches over the last 6 months. Then 6 weeks ago he suddenly gave us 30% fertility on a clutch of 14 eggs. We didn't think much of it and continued on. But we just candled 18 eggs and none are fertile! What is causing this sudden complete infertility in our rooster? He is 1 year old. Nothing has changed about water or food or housing. We moved some 8-week-olds in with the flock but the integration went smoothly and we don't see any signs that that could be causing him trouble. Why is he suddenly infertile?
Also, those eggs are under broody hens. What do we do with these hens now? If we break them of brooding after setting for 10 days will that make them not go broody again? We want them to continue to brood chicks for us? Should we buy some chicks and shove them under them in the middle of the night at 21 days?
Please help!
