We filled small bins with children's toys (toy cars, picture books, coloring supplies, stickers, stuffy's, etc) and shipped them to an organization that divided stuff up into separate packages and shipped it to poor or homeless kids.....kids who otherwise wouldn't be getting presents for Christmas this year.

The website for Operation Christmas child has a list of things that are good things to put in the boxes, like a wow item (which would probably be the biggest part of the box, something a child would really love like a stuffed animal, or a soccer ball) and then fill the rest of it with things like clothes, hygiene products, etc.
We did four boxes, one for each of my kids. We did coloring books with crayons, a cup with a lid, a bouncy ball, a large stuffed animal, socks, leggings (for the girls boxes), a bar of soap, toothbrushes, matchbox cars...
That's what I remember at the moment.
