Went to town for errands, just got back. She was dead on the floor, with blood coming from her mouth. She was fine this a.m., but didn't want to eat. We'll open her up and see what we can find from the organs. I'm so upset.

Cynthia,

So sorry to hear this news. I had one die about a month ago. She was a perfectly healthy 13 month Production Red. Fine one day, died the next. No apparant reason.

Hugs to you.

Cyn - I'm so sorry. You have really been hit hard lately. I'm still guessing either internal injuries from a fall or maybe just a heart defect. Again, so sorry. May 2009 bring joy and nothing but happy, healthy chickens.

As I just told the breeder, we opened her up. Looks like her heart exploded. There was dark arterial type blood that gushed from the heart and half of it was completely deflated. Also, the sac around the heart was filled with fluid. We found several yolks that were developing, but no egg ready, and the other organs seemed healthy, at least there were no lesions that we saw.I took pictures of the necropsy we did and will see if I can find some reference pics. I'm so upset about this. She was beautiful and healthy-looking. At least I did notice that something was off yesterday, so I wasn't completely surprised, but this is so upsetting. Again, something I could never foresee nor prevent, I guess. Darn.

Cyn I am so sorry, this year has just been cruddy considering all that you have been thru. I have had a bad year here as well and I for one am looking forward to a new start in 09, hopefully things will be better.

Oh Cyn! I am so, so sorry. I really thought that maybe she would pull through and that you were up for a break from this stuff for awhile. This is truly terrible. I wonder what would cause something like this if it wasn't the Cocci?

Sending you lots and lots of hugs.

Cyn,

You are a great chicken mom. I really don't think there was anything you could do in this case. It is obvious you love your animals.

What breeder did you get your eggs from?

I am going to get some hatching eggs from a breeder here in Maryland. I am not really goint to breed them, just want some for in my laying flock. I think they are very pretty.
