I have six pullets that are 21 weeks old today. Two started laying 3 weeks ago- my Barred Rock first, and the next day my RIR. My Barred Rock's eggs were the typical tiny pullet eggs at first, but seemed to be getting bigger with the occassional large double-yolker thrown in. My RIR is my smallest chicken by far and lays the biggest eggs. Yesterday her egg weighed 2.5 ozs.
Anyway, when they started laying (3 weeks ago), I changed their grower food over to layer 16%. I provide oyster shell, and grit in separate dishes, and also recently started giving them baked/crushed eggshells. They all get to free range in our yard most of the day so they have plenty of greens, along with the fruits and veggies I give them. The last four to five eggs our Barred Rock laid seem to be getting smaller, and are coated with what I researched to be possible calcium spots/deposits. The color is also turning from a pinkish/brown to like a pink/gray. Today's egg was about the same size as her first one.
My RIR laid a good sized egg today, but it too seemed to be a bit paler in color than normal, and had a few flecks of calcium on it. They both look healthy and they are laying consistently, but I'm worried what might be happening. Is this normal for the beginning weeks of laying, or does it have something to do with their diet? Are they getting too much calcium possibly? Sorry for the novel lol.
