When I got up to feed the girls this morning, I found my 4 month old Barred Rock pullet Rhoda hanging by her foot from the fence - I suspect she'd slipped and gotten it stuck between two slats. No idea how long she had been hanging there. There are some bloody abrasions right above her foot around where the dewclaw, but nothing seems broken. She won't stand up, but I'm guessing she's in pain from struggling to get out, and possibly exhausted from shock. Luckily she's very used to being handled. I sprayed the wounds with Bactine and wrapped them up with self-adhesive bandages left over from when I broke my toe so she wouldn't peck at herself. Right now I have her in the cage she was raised in with food and water. She's sitting there making little conversational noises at me and ate grapes (her favorite) when I offered them.

Questions:

Has this happened to anyone else? Did you take your bird to the vet, or wait for her to heal on her own?
Is it OK to give a chicken aspirin, or any kind of human painkiller, and what would be the dose? I also have gabapentin and tramadol, which we have for our dog and cat.
What signs should I look out for that she might be getting worse? Signs of shock?

Thanks for your help!

Unless it is a traumatic injury, chickens usually recover quite quickly. She will need some rest for a few days. Grapes are OK but don't avoid real feed (perhaps wetted or fermented) and high protein treats like canned fish or mealworms. Make sure to provide #3 adult grit.
I did have a rooster hanging by a leg once for an unknown amount of time who recovered well.
My last leg injury was a rooster that was attacked by a coyote. He couldn't walk. I put him in his own quarters and after a month, he was good as new.

My concern would be that if it's not broken, it might be dislocated. If she likes being handled, you could try gently moving the joints to see if there is normal movement compared to the other leg or if there's a problem.

I had a roo with a broken leg and other injuries following a dog attack on the flock. I put him in a large dog kennel in the coop while he was healing. That was almost a year ago. He healed fairly well, but still won't go up on the roost at night and that leg is a bit shaky when he walks. I misted his open wounds twice a day with Rose hydrosol to prevent infection and help keep him calm. It also helps some with pain.

I agree, letting her rest for a few days and keeping the wound clean. I think the chicken chick website has a mixture for pain meds using aspirin and water. However risk might outweigh the benefit right now. My guess is shock from hanging. I have a hen that liked to fly out of my run on days they couldn't free range (stupid neighbor dogs running) she caught in the fence once but I got her quick she. She was fine, but it happens. Hope your girl is good soon.
We doubled the height of the fence.

Good news - I found a vet who does chickens! No broken bones and the leg isn't out of joint, but the vet suspects Rhoda stretched a nerve. She's going to be in Chickentensive Care (a big rabbit hutch indoors) for a month while she recovers. Rhoda was by herself for a while as a baby when the ones I bought her with turned out to be roosters & had to go back to the breeder, so she's extremely socialized and chill.
The vet added that she might always have a limp, but hey, so do I, so no big deal.
