I'm not sure it would have made it hard to pass. Maybe it wasn't as slippery without the shell. She sure was uncomfortable.
Maybe she was just freaked out by the feeling of an egg moving down her tubes!

Pullets should be wormed at 16 weeks old. Round Worms will hurt their reproductive tract.

Those type of soft eggs actually do not move through the reproductive tract as easily as a normal egg and are therefore harder to pass. Hopefully this is just a fluke of a newly laying hen and she'll start laying normal eggs from now on.
