Pullet or cockerel, bantam or standard?

Oops, didn't see those other posts under juliechick's first one.

Are the hens darker than roosters when they are grown too, or is it just a pullet/cockerel thing?
 
Due to the way genetics of barring work, females can only ever have the dark coloration.

The gene that causes the barring is linked to a sex chromosome [Z] females can only get one of, because they have two different kinds of sex chromosomes [ZW] and males have two of the same kind[ZZ].
[Note, this is opposite to XX/XY in mammals where the males have two different sex chromosomes[XY] and females two the same[XX].]

Males CAN have the dark coloration[They need two copies of the barring gene to have the light barring] but this will only happen if one of the parents is not a barred bird [or if the father has the dark barring, then some of his young will have proper barring, but some will not.]

x2. Works with any pure black barred or cuckoo bird. Black sex link males will be just as dark as pullets.
