Help! I may have a 2nd accidental Roo, which I cannot keep due to city ordinance. This one is a blue laced red Wyandotte and is one of my favorites. I found someone to rehome to if necessary. 6 wks old - hatch date 6/21/22 (I know it’s early to try to determine) but I watched “her” crow this morning while I was out in the coop. I was waiting to see a bigger, taller comb but apparently the Wyandotte comb isn’t so tall? Also, this is the only other “pullet” who regularly challenges the other one who I know is a Roo. A pullet wouldn’t do that, right?

I am devastated. I know day old vent sexing isn’t 100% accurate. And I know these are “just chickens” to most people. But I love each one as they all have different personalities and looks. Not to mention the time and care put in. They’ve just now been put outside- meaning they’ve been cared for like little babies up to this point. I get up early each morning, come home from work each day at lunch, and they are the first thing I care for when I get home each night. (Plus these two Roos are the most expensive chicks I purchased) I still have 8 others but I think you all understand my heart here. I love each one and having to rehome two of them is like ripping my heart out.

Farmin’ isn’t for sissies I know that. I just don’t like this part. I don’t.

In addition, “her” legs are much thicker, stronger and more developed than the other gals, all the same age.

That’s a cockerel. The crow is a definite sign that young. Hens can technically crow but it s rare and doesn’t happen under a year old. The comb is very red for 6 weeks so that’s another sign. Pullets do taunt and chestbump as well but it’s very common for two cockerels to do it a lot more often to each other.

I am getting ready to deal with your same issue, what to do about a couple of Roos in our pullet purchase. Our chicks are a few weeks before crowing starts, our neighbors will not be happy! Technically, we are not in the city limits, but are surrounded by the city, and very nice neighborhoods. Hope you found a good solution for your extra boys.
