Hi!
I entered the wonderful world of backyard chicken keeping in May. I have wanted chickens for years and an ordinance was passed in our town allowing hens. My husband and I went to a poultry show and got a pair of 9 month old girls, a buff orpington and a cochin. I noticed that both were missing feathers on the backs of their heads and thought that they might have been with a rooster. My husband built an incubator out of a cooler......and, well now we have chicks! One is a buff orpington, and the other 3 are either cochins or cochin/orpington crosses. The oldest is 5 weeks and 3 days old, the youngest is the orp and is 4 weeks 5 days old.

Here are a few pictures. I know they are not the best...but any ideas what I might have here? Not allowed to keep roos in my town and I am hoping for at least one pullet.

All of them look like pullets? One had a tiny pink waddle that is a little bigger than the others.....but none jump out as roo to me....is it too early to tell still. I have been on pins and needles for weeks. I have 2 names picked out already, but not assigned as giving one up after naming it would probably kill me.

I love buff orpingtons too...my girl Penny is a social chatty little thing. I love how she comes over and tells me all about her day in that huh huh huh way she has! :)

Yes, they are still too young to tell for sure but they are looking like pullets as of now. If you did have a rooster it would be the last one.

Yes, buff orps are my fave breed. Glad you enjoy them too!

If you don't mind my asking...how long do you think til I know for sure?
The last one is the waddley one. :)

If you asked me if buff orpingtons or cochins are my favorite breed, I would have a hard time answering it. There are things about both breeds I love. I chose my cochin Molly as my avatar because I liked that picture of her.

Usually around 15 weeks is when you can know for sure.

Your avatar chicken is so pretty!! What breed of cochin is she?

15weeks.....oh my goodness I might combust!!!

Thanks though...if it is ok I may add update pictures once every week or so.

Molly is a golden laced Cochin. Very sweet girl and a better layer than I expected.
