I have a Rhode Island Red Pullet approximatley 12 weeks old. I raised them from fluffy chicks until two weeks when I moved them outside into a small run/shelter within my chicken yard with heat lamp at night only. I wanted the big/little chickens to get used to each other. Two days ago I let the the 7 pullets mix in with my flock of seven two year old hens. Other then a little hogging over the feed, everything seemed to be going okay. Yesterday at dusk one of the pullets was by herself under their raised coop and had made an indentation in the dust, and seemed to not be feeling well. I put her in the coop with the rest of them but was worried because she really wasn't moving. This morning, she was wobbling around in the coop after everyone else came out, I offered her food and water, she ate and drank while sitting in the litter inside the coop. I had to go to work so left her with water next to her.

So tonight she was outside with the others, but didn't go back in. She has a gimpy leg, I have brought her into the garage and set her up with a heat lamp, food and water. She ate with great gusto, but in checking her all over it is obvious to me that her leg is broken. A vet visit is out of the question. Any suggestions?

Ive heard using flexible pipe cleaners and non-sticky medical tape to make a splint can help, but never have actually had that happen...might need something sturdier like a popsicle stick. Good luck!

The link in my signature has a lot of good info on foot/leg issues. The site has pics to help you along. Good luck.

Okay, we wrapped the leg, added popsicle sticks cut to fit and wrapped that with the self sticking tape. Keep your fingers crossed. She is eating and drinking and seems content to just snuggle in for now.

I had a RiR pullet about the same age that happened to, and I set her leg with vetwrap using instructions very similar to the ones you received. She walked with a limp, but she got around just fine and free ranged all over the five acres here with the rest of the birds. We called her our ninja chicken.
