Pullets randomly clucking?

today I was just watching my chickens out in their run when a chicken in the coop started clucking rapidly? I ran to the door and looked in, my pullet was clucking like mad! Wings, our cockerel, flies up into the nesting box, right after bumping into the pullet. She walked in after him, but then he left her in there and went out. 30 minutes later I came back and checked for eggs. There was a new egg. A white one, was that chicken clucking because she was going to lay her first egg?

Most chickens do something called the egg song and before they lay an egg they call over the rooster to fertilize it. That is what it was. So if you incubate eggs that egg may hatch with proper care(and an incubator). Go to BYC’s articles and you may find some really helpful information.

Nooo, not to fertilize it.....that happen during other 'activities'. ;)

A male will often 'escort' a female to a good nesting spot and/or stay near her while she lays. The 'egg song' is a vocalization used near laying time...before and after the egg is actually laid.
