I was wondering... do girls get spurs?

Yes, some pullets get spurs although they are more delicate than those of their male counterparts. It is genetically based with some strains being more inclined to have spurs.

Leghorns, Hamburgs,Game, Mediteranian and some other girls can have it.

I've seen game hens with long spurs and double spurs!

Don't mess with their chicks when they are out free ranging... I found out the hard way once.

Just about any breed of hen can have it, it depends on the breeder/hatchery.

Whew! Thanks you guys. I was a little worried about my California Grey "pullet". mom is a Leghorn so..... maybe that's why... but we'll see in a couple of weeks

You have a California grey pullet? Could you show a picture? I have two California grey roosters and chicks by them and dominique hens. I have never seen pure California grey females other than with low quality pictures on internet.

I have a question about spurs--are they born with it, or do they develop as they get older? Just wondering.
