Pullets with Spurs?????

I was wondering... do girls get spurs?

Our pretty pullet has exceptionally long, lovely feet. She is part Silkie. Her extra thumb toe appears very long, which was at first mistaken for a long spur.

Yes, some pullets get spurs although they are more delicate than those of their male counterparts. It is genetically based with some strains being more inclined to have spurs.

Leghorns, Hamburgs,Game, Mediteranian and some other girls can have it.

I've seen game hens with long spurs and double spurs!

Don't mess with their chicks when they are out free ranging... I found out the hard way once.

Just about any breed of hen can have it, it depends on the breeder/hatchery.

Some of my game hens and dominiques as well have spurs. Makes for more unpleasant floggings on you but may also be harder on chicks and eggs being brooded.

Whew! Thanks you guys. I was a little worried about my California Grey "pullet". mom is a Leghorn so..... maybe that's why... but we'll see in a couple of weeks
