Pup with diarrhea

How old is the puppy?

I had a 5 wk pup that simply couldn't process puppy food, she ate the rice, venison, yogurt and chicken broth for a month and developed fine. I added dog food over time and transitioned her over to that. Hopefully worms can be ruled out soon.

I use pepto all the time if my dogs have diarrhea....... but I'd keep a close watch for parvo. If the pup hunches up, looks at her side alot and acts in any pain....... get her in right away!! Matter of fact, I'd take her in to get tested anyway. Rule that out before anything!!

Hope it works out for them.

I double second "test for coccidia" as that is one of the most common causes of diahreah in puppies, if it won't just clear up in a day or so on it's own. Their poop doesn't always show blood, and has sort of a sharp, acidy bitter smell to it too.

Whatever else you do, withold food for 24 hours like the other bycer suggested. In that time u can give water, PeptoBismol ( only the liquid), or Immodium tablets but nothing else. Witholding food seems to be the single best thing you can do if it is just "normal" puppy tummy upset. Then just gradually give him a half cup of rice, then a full cup, then add a little turkey, etc depending on what size pup and then gradually mix his food in.

i wouldn't pull feed from it puppies can get real sick from not eating u don't want it to get worse. it sounds like it's digestion is messed up from sudden change in feed, most likely it can't process the new feed. if by chance it is cocci albon would work for that also. i'd be afraid the pepto or immodium would be to strong for a pup and it can easily bound them up if they have to much and cause probs the other way. i can see useing it on an adult dog but i'd think a pup would be to small to dose right. pups need weened off and on new foods sudden changes in feed almost always causes diarrhea in puppies and kittens.

Albon is a cocci treatment - so that is a great thing to give or SMZ (prefer SMZ)

Definately need to do a fecal. How many days has the animal had diarhea? Was the food just switched or weaned over to the new food?

You can send a fecal in yourself to WADDL and it is about $25 - and they will do a "real" fecal floatation - and it is WAY more accurate than the vet - and sounds like you will get the correct information. You would still have to take that info (if positive for anything) to get the medications - but at least you will have what the pup has.

I have seen adult dogs (mastiff) that was 2.5 years old, fully vaccinated, owned by a vet - get parvo - so even vaccinated can, and have, come down with it - however, you will notice the pup going down hill - and the feces have a very nasty - very distinctive smell.
