I am praying for you and your dog!!

Yep, this is what Moms do -- take care of sick children and pets on nights and holidays. My dogs and cats ONLY get sick after 5PM on Friday through evening on Sunday!!! I swear that I have paid for the addition at the Emergency Vets!!!

I hope that you can keep getting fluids into your puppy.

Could you "encourage" him with chicken broth?? or something liquid that is more "interesting" than water?? Sub-c injections may be necessary. They lose a lot of fluids through diarrhea.

Please keep us posted.

Good Luck!!

This is a picture of my "Polish Bear" Scout is her name and Atticus Finch is her brother (thank God he's not sick). The first time I tried to say she looked like a little Polar Bear, it came out "Polish Bear" and my DH wanted to know what a Polish Bear was. She's been my little "Polish Bear" ever since.

I'll be up all night giving fluids. She will only take them from the dropper. I'm alternating water with vitamins/electrolytes added and fresh goat milk from my goat (figured it's good for coating the stomach and high in fat and vitamins). The vet said the only thing that could be done if it's Parvo is to keep fluids in her.

Everyone say a prayer from my little Polish Bear.

Saying a prayer,

Parvo is HIGHLY contagous and I have never seen it without blood. I worked at a pet store and a puppy came back dead with it. I got undressed outside, bagged my cloths, showered, washed REAL good. I had puppies in the house which all came out ok but I stayed away from the sick dogs. You even need to be concerned about anyone in your home or going to someone elses home.

Maybe he will eat ice chips?
make it soup?

I am so sorry your beautiful puppy is sick! If the other dog is not sick yet I wonder if it could be Pancreatitis?! My dog ate some rotten corn (My husband does not watch her) while I was at work two years ago! That night she got very sick, she could not walk and I rushed her to the vet in the middle of the night. She had the nasty diarrhea just like parvo! I hope she makes it and it is not parvo!

I just finished giving her another round of fluids - orally with syringe. I'm still giving the vitamin/electrolyte water and the fresh goat milk. In the last 5 hours she has not had the awful smelling diarrhea - actually she hasn't had that since before 10 p.m. when I called the vet and we gave the Sulmet. She did have either diarrhea or vomit in the interim, I can't tell which, but it was clear water, with only the tiny bits of scrambled egg she ate last night, and - NO SMELL. So not sure if that's a good sign or not but there was no awful smelling yellow diarrhea since I last fed her at 1:00 a.m.

I'll keep everyone updated but still wondering if there are those out there who have experienced Parvo up close and personal and any input you have. Was there blood present in all cases. That seemed to be the key piece of evidence that my vet said was missing. Also the fact that this puppy seems to get better by day and has been seen up and playing during the day then seriously ill by night.

Of course, both puppies can't seem to stop eating the chicken poop in the coop or the chicken feed. We have six dogs and two cats (who all share communal water/feed dishes) in addition to all the free ranging farm animals and if someone comes down with a highly contagious disease - well....I won't go there.

I lost an entire litter of Rotweilers to Parvo. Every 4 hours another
puppy would get sick and I'd have to take it for euthanizing. My pups
would get lethargic and eventually paralysis would set in. I do not recall
any diahrea or vomiting. Rotties are very susceptable to Parvo.

If your puppy is still hanging on than my guess is there is something
else going on here. From the sounds of it she is improving and that's
a great sign.

Keep the faith Ruth. She'll pull through.

I am not a vet but used to work with one. She was great at getting parvo pups to survive (80-90% survived in the 4 years I worked with her).

Parvo causes the intetinal wall to die, hence blood in the stool and the rotten smell that is associated with it.

If there is no blood in the stool, chances are you are fighting something other than parvo.

If the dog is still vomiting, you do not want to give food as that will just make it vomit more. You can give small amounts of liquid, we usually used sweet tea or gatoraide. You can freeze it into ice cubes so the dog will consume slower and be more likely to keep it down.

For dogs that had diarhea from other causes (other than parvo) I remember she used to give a drug called metronitazole.

You can also give the dog immodium, but check with your vet on this for dosage.

The MOST important thing is to figure out what is causing the v/d.
