You should suggest t her to only breed pure breeds, instead of of adding to the millions of mixes being killed in shelters.

The catahoula/bulldog cross is often done as a working cross by people who hunt hogs. It's pretty likely that those dogs will end up in working homes. You may or may not approve of hog hunting but it flat out beats the shelter.

I do NOT approve of all that cockapoo, puggle, labradoodle BS that is going on, but purpose bred mutts can and do serve a purpose, you can't just take out a broad brush and paint them all "Bad"
Honestly, I am so very, very much more worried by all those who are going "Cute!! What kind is he??"
Please, don't get a catahoula because they are "cute" puppies. They were bred to hunt wild hog by going out and grabbing it by the ear and holding it there until the hunter comes up and decide what he wants to do with it. Also, to get really rank cattle to quit dodging around and go back to the herd.

This takes an incredibly tough, hard, independently thinking dog. They are lovely. They are also stubborn, highly active (fetch in your back yard won't cut it) independent and hard-headed and really the sweetest of them is just not wired to be nothing more then your average family pet - they need a strong leader and a job. They are good dogs, but YOU as an owner need to be ready for them and willing to put in the work that they need. They just don't think like a Lab, kwim?

I plan to go for agility competition so that will be his job.

I researched the breed extensively before I decided on a dog and then I found a breeder that just happened to have puppies when I was looking.

The breeder doesn't use her dogs for hunting, the b*tch is agile and does goat and sheep herding and the stud is fast does trail riding with horses. They are both competent and content dogs with very good temperments which I hope they've passed on to their puppies.

2cool4you, from reading your posts, it's clear you've done your homework. I actually wasn't saying it for you.

Just an awful lot of people who only see the cute. I'd hate for anyone to start looking for a catahoula because they're adorable puppies. LOL, I right now have a puppy who looks like a border collie but is really a cross between a heelerX and something big and black.
If someone had adopted him just for cute he'd be at the pound already. Mouthy, hard-headed, dominant (just what I needed but I wanted him for work)
And Heaven forbid that anyone should see him (especially after the hours of training I have and will keep pouring into him) and think "Isn't he CUTE, I want one JUST like him" and go find a Border collie puppy. An adolescent BC is like an ADHD child on speed. They end up at the pound.

Sorry, it's just I've worked at the pound and all puppies are cute, then they get about 10 months and we get them "I didn't know my Malamute would get so big and shed" "I didn't think my terrier would bark and dig so much"
So I just thought I'd warn people that Catahoulas are tough, hard, athletes who need a coach.

I'm sure you'll be a good coach for your boy!

should be that way before anyone gets any kind of dog. I ended up with a Heeler pup that someone dump out into a graveyard out behind my house. Holy Moses!! Hard-headed, nippy, athletic. Thought I was gonna have get rid of this dog for sure!!! 2 years to the day of finding her in the graveyard, she saved my life when I collapsed from a yellow jacket sting. 4 days short of having her in my life for 12 years, I held her head in my lap as we crossed her over to Rainbow Bridge not knowing how my life could go on without her.

KNOW the breed you are getting!

2Cool--cute pup!! Keep him busy! A tired working dog is a happy working dog!!

CoyoteMagic, you said it.

I know how much you must miss your heeler. I still miss my GSD/BC x. His noble heart stopped 2 years ago at the age of 11. That dog was famous. LOL, and as a puppy I walked him at least 8 miles a day so my house would stay in one piece!

And my new heeler x. Mouthy! Even knowing what I was getting into I've still turned around more then once and yelled "You furry little monster! So help me if you HEEL me One More Time...."

2cool4you, I hope you enjoy your pup as much as I enjoy mine. And be sure to remember as my Dad always used to tell me about children and puppies "God in his infinite wisdom made them so cute so you won't boot them
