Puppy training advice

Hello and welcome. What kind of puppy? I suggest a basic obedience class if you have no experience training.

First and foremost, never call your dog to you for discipline, that's critical. Otherwise the dog won't come to you when you call it. Something I don't see on websites.

Thank you! We are getting a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon in a couple of weeks. Since he is a bird dog, he will need to be well trained in 'Leave It!' when it comes to the chickens. Yes, classes will be important I'm sure. I have worked with my other dogs but they were all around a year old when we got them. I'm going to read The Art of Raising a Puppy by the Monks of New Skete just so I don't mess the little guy up before we make it to class. Any other suggestions?
 
I would look into positive training. I think it's much better to teach your dog with trust rather than fear. Petco others a great training course that covers sit, lay down, stay, leave it, touch, leash training and more in the first class. You can also watch Zak George's YouTube videos. They are very helpful and informative to new puppy owners, aggressive dogs, other issues, and people looking to teach their pets advanced tricks. He also has a book that I really liked.

Teething.....yeah that will be "fun"....
Lots and lots of teething toys. Get ones designed for bigger dogs since yours will be a big one.

You already likely know more than you think you do since this isn't a first dog.
Patience will be needed because everything will be new.

You KNOW we will want to see your new pup....:pop

Agreed! I also really like KikoPup, Simpawtico Dog Training, and Training Positive on YouTube. They are all excellent.

I am a breeder of German Shepherds and I rely heavily on German Shepherd Man.. his methods work on all dogs. My dogs are all very well trained and I owe a lot of my methods to German Shepherd Man and Puppy Girl! Also, Zack George. His potty training videos on YouTube are awesome. It is always a good idea to start your pup out very young in your chicken run. My last litter of pups (there were 12 of them) started off around my chickens at 3 weeks old. At 8 weeks when they went to permanent homes, they were all at the point that they paid absolutely no mind to my girls.

Plenty of toys makes such a difference! Both my dogs have never had issues with chewing stuff up. A good assortment of durable toys are good. My dogs have so many toys that we bag them up and switch them around every week, keeping it exciting for them. Also, give him plenty of attention. For my Yorkie Rosie I would just sit and throw the toy for 15mins - an hour straight... About 15 times a day lol
