Purchased eggs - days to hatch -

is it 21 days from start of incubation or when the eggs were laid? I've heard it both ways.
I bought some French Maran eggs at a poultry swap on April 6th and started incubation that afternoon. They were laid on April 3rd. Someone told me it would be 21 days from April 3rd, then I heard 21 days from the start of incubation, April 6th.

It is 21 days (give or take a day or two) from the start of INCUBATION.

Thanks!! So, if incubation began on April 6th, I should look for a little pipping around April 27th and stop turning on the 24th, correct? We've raised chicks naturally, but new to the incubation process. I am sooo eggs-cited!!!
