Marans They will lay all those colors. If you take a fresh laid dark marans egg you can wash the color off to a tan egg much like you hold in your hand . It is possible you have Discount marans . Meaning that they have been crossed with another bred and the hybrid bred back to a purebred enough times to get the egg color . But I'd say marans .

Not all Marans lay dark brown eggs because it depends on the quality of the selection so they could be considered Marans even if not "excellent" Marans. I do not want to sound rude but if the breeder sold you these hens as pure French Marans, then if I were you, I would be a bit pissed off... I mean this breed is worldwide famous for laying chocolate-coloured eggs, it's the reason why people want Maran hens in their hen house and yours do not actually lay chocolate-coloured eggs because I see 1 speckled egg, 1 chocolate-coloured egg and 2 light brown eggs in your pictures... so I hope you didn't pay too much

It depends on the quality of the strain in my opinion.. It would be interesting to know how many chocolate coloured eggs they actually lay.

I did not at all. These hens were given to me after I lost 40 birds to a fox.

They lay chocolate eggs around 35-50% of the time. Not much in winter though.

It's likely that one of your Marans lays the majority of the chocolate-coloured eggs so if you wanted to make a selection and buy a Marans rooster in the future, I would incubate and hatch only chocolate-coloured eggs
